A man left a grocery store at Base Line Road East and Wharncliffe Road South without paying for items at about 6 p.m. Sunday, London police said.
When the man was confronted, he assaulted a security guard with pepper spray and kept walking.
Employees retrieved the stolen items and called police, who located the suspect nearby.
A 36-year-old London man is charged with theft under $5,000 and assault with a weapon. He is to appear in court on July 18.
